TRY AND THINK POSITIVELY THEY SAY!
HOW CAN I DO THIS AND WHY SHOULD I?
Once again this week, I was reminded of the enormous impact our mind and thought processes have on any outcome in a physical pursuit. The mind-body connection is obviously strong and the mind rules!
An athlete was explaining to me all of the reasons they thought that they were a terrible runner. This type of negative thinking will manifest itself in your feelings and actions. I believe a better strategy is to find some reasons, even just one or two, why you are an improved runner (ie. “I have been following my plan and training consistently”, “I have been focusing on regular core work”, “My turnover has improved”, etc) and centre your self-talk from there. Change the narrative so to speak. I have said this before but you cannot overstate the importance of finding positives and being proactive and intentional to drive a better outcome.
If this is a challenge for you, like it is for a lot of athletes, you may need a circuit breaker to interrupt the cycle of negative self-feedback.
There is a lot of research to show that listening to your favourite music or upbeat tunes enhances physical performance. It just makes us feel good. Perhaps give this a try as a means of distraction if you feel like you are getting tangled up with negative thoughts and energy.
Remember, the glass is half full, not half empty.
Let’s go Team!
Until next time,
